project #2 – one photo mural January 31, 2009

This project has been banging around in my head for weeks.  I knew what I wanted – to blow up one photo big enough to cover a wall.  I checked into having it printed at a specialty printer – um, no thanks, I’ll hold on to my hundreds of dollars, thanks.  So I cropped and blew up the photo myself, and printed it at home on our great photo printer.  Second, I figured I was going to decoupage the separate pieces onto our wall.  Got a bunch of white glue, even bought a tool to smooth out bubbles in the paper.  I think I tried 5 variations to no avail – the wall is not conducive to decoupage.  So after pulling off bunches of paint, and getting glue all over the wall, I opted for Keith’s suggestion of a bunch of frames.  This photo doesn’t do it justice…there are 15 8×10 frames, each one containing a piece of the photo as a whole (systematically numbered – columns 1-5 and rows A-C).  That was the easy part.  Then came the math – I got a straight line (very hard for me to do) for the top of the project.  Measured the exact location on the back of the frame where the nail would sit when the photo was hanging (4″ in and 3/4″ down) and mounted the first photo.  1 1/2″ between each frame (all sides) – but I still got it up in a day, and I’m DAMN pleased with myself!  And yes, I took that photo at night in Rome, on the street near the Colosseum where we were staying.  :-)

irish coffee – perfect on a cold night January 31, 2009

I pulled out my trusty whipped cream maker (while Keith ran to the corner store for some heavy cream).  It’s so handy!  I poured in some chocolate liqueur and a bit of almond milk and sugar (to sweeten it up).  Then 1/2 pint of heavy cream.  Pop on the CO2 canister, and give it a couple of shakes, and you have a delicious whipped cream.  Perfect to top off a big mug of irish coffee (whiskey and french press Illy coffee).  I piled on the whipped cream, but really – there’s no other way to have it.jan-irish-coffee

We had framed photos all over the apartment.  I like that.  But I wanted something different.  So I spent a day and created our new photo wall.  It took me a good while, but I’m pretty pleased with it!jan-photo-wall

There’s even this cute little photo of a little ME outside my Grandma & Grandpa’s house in Westerville, Ohio….wearing a cowboy hat.  jan-little-kid-chris

Does anyone else love this show as much as Keith and I do?  Thanks to BBC for airing the second season (it started last night) of Last Restaurant Standing.  Every week we watch the show and have heated discussions about what we thought the contestants did right or wrong.  I get so passionate about it!  :-)

Con Edison – please keep screwing me January 28, 2009

I saw on the news yesterday that Con Edison, the lovely utilities provider for those of us in Manhattan, charge their customers more for electricity than ANYONE ELSE IN THE NATION.  That’s one of those special things about living in New York – the way every company (especially service providers…hmm…MTA) keep fucking us over again and again and we just have to take it.  I feel so used.

Every year I get crazy looking for a ballot – so I just bit the bullet and made my own.  So here you go.  Want it in Word?  Email me…[on a side note, Keith and I always have a bet going to see who picks the most winners.  Last year I lost, and now we both have tattoos!  I'm hoping to even up the score this year, but I haven't yet figured out what I'll be betting.  We also play against his family in Ohio.  And this year Angel & Paul will be partaking of our Oscar Madness!!]
