holiday weekend part 4 – last day with mom & dad November 30, 2009

We relaxed a bit in the morning, and then shot down to check out the Highline before having to usher Keith’s parents off to the airport.

We even managed to walk through the Chelsea Market for a sugar stop – cupcakes & cookies!  :-)

Keith’s parents are truly some of the most marvelous people I know.  They are welcoming, loving, and can debate until the wee hours of the morning!  This holiday weekend was one of the best we’ve ever had – take that back, it was the best Thanksgiving of my adult life.  And sharing it with Mom & Dad was amazing.  My life is richer because Keith has shared them with me, and they have invited me in to their family.  There’s nothing more wonderous than surrounding yourself with people you love, and who you know love you back.

holiday weekend part 3 – dad’s birthday celebration November 30, 2009

This was a milestone year for both of Keith’s parents.  We celebrated with dinner and a murder for his Mom.  For his Dad, we managed to have quite a New York Celebration.  First, we went to Birdland for the Big Band Jazz early set on Friday’s at 5pm.  Awesome set, and we had a great table right down front.  I think we all had a great time there – and dinner was very good!

Then we hoofed it a couple blocks north to see “Ragtime” on Broadway.  None of us but Keith were familiar with the musical.  It’s a great show, and the cast was pretty rock solid, for the most part.  Not a very ‘happy’ musical, but still great none-the-less.

And what night at the theatre is complete without a trip to Sardis for a cocktail, or two?  As we sat down we even managed to look out the window and watch Jude Law saying hi to fans as he left the theatre where he’s performing “Hamlet.”

holiday weekend part 2 – Thanksgiving feast November 30, 2009

I will fully admit that I went a little overboard with the Thanksgiving Day feast.  But I wanted it to be special!  The day started relatively early when I got up to make a fritatta for Keith’s parents (and us).  And by noon, my spreadsheet told me I needed to be in the kitchen working, so I was.  So I was off, and as a reminder, I put up the menu for all to see:

Mom helped me shell the boiled quail eggs for the first amuse bouche:

And I chopped up some chipotles for the pomegranate sauce that we NEVER used.  It was too damn hot – and I added gobs and oodles of honey, with no success!  Oh well, it was pretty and smelled good:

Baked off the yams early as well.  The hard part is getting the skin off in one piece while they’re hot.  But it worked…gotta build up those chef calluses:

Everyone else was hanging out having a grand ‘ol time while I slaved in the kitchen.  :-)   Kidding, I jest!  I love being in the kitchen, so no chore there.

I chopped & sauted the cauliflower early on, knowing I could finish it in the oven just before dinner.  Here’s the topping for the cauliflower – roasted almonds, tarragon, chives, parsley, capers, green raisins.  That got covered with some homemade rye bread crumbs when all was said & done:

The chef at work – cutting & arranging the yams.  You can see the brown butter vinaigrette ready to be poured over the yams.

The spreadsheet worked like a charm.  The first amuse bouche, Duet of Egg, was right on time.  It’s a boiled quail egg, sprinkle of chives, pepper, a couple of salmon roe eggs, and a shaving of fresh mushroom.

The second amuse bouche (not pictured) was a big success – roasted brussel sprouts, fried pancetta, lemon, butter and parsley.  The ducks cooked for 3 hours (and there were 3 of them) after stuffing them with cooked apples, prunes, rye bread, onions (and other things).  They had to be turned every 20 minutes to get the skin nice and crispy, but it was worth it:

It was absolutely amazing for Keith and I to share this Thanksgiving with his parents, and our great friends Angel & Paul.  We were entrenched in the spirit of Thanksgiving with those we love surrounding us:

Keith’s parents came out for the holiday weekend.  We had a fantastic time and managed to do A LOT in the short time they were here.  So I’ll give you a few of the highlights.  Tuesday night I just made a simple dinner and we hung out at home, catching up.  Wednesday we headed into midtown, and Keith found a walking tour of Christmas window displays (via his iPhone) that started at Macy’s, included Lord & Taylor and a few others.  So we followed the tour, starting at Macy’s:

We also hit Lord & Taylor:

And then we stopped at Rockefeller:

And walked by Radio City:

Where we sat at the bar in the restaurant, had a cocktail and watched the tourists ice skating.  After the cocktail, we made our way to the upper west side.  We had dinner reservations, and figured we’d go see all the Thanksgiving day parade balloons in line for the parade the next day.  The crowds were CRAZY – so we went to dinner first, and fortified ourselves with delicious food and drink from Recipe before braving the crowds to get photos of Kermit’s butt, among other things:

Keith’s parents get in tomorrow afternoon.  Neither of us can wait – we always LOVE it when they come to visit.  And since I changed my Thanksgiving menu from lamb (Dad loves lamb as much as I do) to duck, I’m doing a special dinner tomorrow night of frenched rib lamb chops.  HOWEVER, Mom isn’t a big fan of lamb.  SO – Keith and his Mom get frenched rib pork chops.  Isn’t that just darling and delicious?

Wednesday evening we’re going to see the balloons for the Macy’s parade.  And I’m sure there will be photos galore from the big meal on Thursday.  We have some other things planned…but I musn’t reveal!  Should be a wonderful long weekend!
