dinner at recipe November 12, 2009

Last night I met Keith at Barnes & Noble by Lincoln Center after work.  We picked up the last few Christmas cards we needed (yes, I even have all the envelopes addressed – I’m on the fucking BALL this year).  Then we popped into Bed, Bath & Beyond – initially just for a new shower curtain.  But I ended up getting a new Hankle knife set (I am totally giddy about it – I can’t wait to use them).  Keith had read about a relatively new restaurant on Amsterdam, between 81st & 82nd called Recipe, so we gave it a try.

The restaurant is small, and very welcoming.  The staff was attentive and perfectly friendly.  And there are so many cute little quirks about the place – the tiny clothespin that holds the menu shut, the artisan sinks with the sexy soap in the bathroom, and the cute labels on the bottles for tap water:recipe1

We ordered a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and poured over the menu.  Couldn’t resist the foie gras terrine with figs – it was gorgeously delicious (and of course I forgot to take a photo).  For dinner, I had the Lamb Shank Ragout – it was absolutely delicious.  Perfect on a cool fall night.  recipe2 lambshankragoutCan you tell how much I loved the sauce?recipe4 chris

Keith had a Cornish Game Hen with homemade barbecue sauce, and a side of…guess…macaroni & cheese (with ham and peas).recipe3 cornish hen and macncheese

And we still had time before the class we were heading to, so we took a peek at the dessert menu and I immediately jumped on the Panna Cotta with local honey.  recipe5 panna cottaAnd since they don’t serve espresso, I had to settle for a Remy Martin and Keith had a glass of Port.

High marks for Recipe – probably the best restaurant we have found on the upper west side.  The food is luxurious and yet approachable, and the presentation is just as tasty.  I have a feeling Recipe is going to become a regular for The Husbands.

honeyA couple of weeks ago I got some honey from the honey man at the farmer’s market.  He told me that he and his son harvest all the honey, and he expertly bottles the honey according to the flowers the bees were gathering from.  We had the Orchard Blossom – fantastic.  He wasn’t there last week, and I needed some honey (for late night tea) so I got some at Whole Foods.  Wow, just not as good.  Still honey, still sweet, yet…he was back again today.  Forest Flower – it’s amazing!  Savory and sweet, rich and complex.  Honey never tasted so sweet!  (And a lovely perk is the price – also amazing!!)

Yes, I’ve been eating this for breakfast at my desk.  Yes, I’ll probably keep eating it through lunch.  Nothing like a bag of Asiago & Cracked Pepper Popcorn (by Oogie’s) to give you a healthy, balanced meal.  :-)

recent meals: cornish game hens, proscuitto wrapped prawns & ribs June 30, 2009

I’m behind!  I have photos of food that need to be posted!  So, here they come – all at once!

cornish hen

This cornish game hen was dusted with some paprika, salt & pepper (and a little garlic salt).  There’s a huge elephant garlic bulb shoved up it’s yoo-hoo for flavoring.  In the background, some really nice brocollini & baby corn that was steamed, and up front some yellow squash that I sauteed lightly.

proscuitto wrapped prawns

For this meal I bought some HUGE prawns.  I de-veined and shelled them (and in this case, I even took off the tails).  I wrapped each one in a thin slice of proscuitto, and then pan fried them for a bit on each side till the shrimp were cooked through.  There’s a leafy green salad in the back, and some broccoli.  I attempted to make the sauteed broccoli that I love from the Elephant – but I think I need to add some fish sauce next time.  Still good:  slices of garlic, broccoli, soy sauce.

st. louis style ribs a la chris

WF had a sale on St. Louis Style ribs last week.  So I got a couple of slabs.  I made my (now) favorite rub and used some Hickory BBQ sauce.  Then I made a chopped salad that was inspired by a recipe I saw on Smitten Kitchen:  three kinds of peppers, cucumbers, radishes, red onion and feta cheese (the red onion were quickly pickled, and then the red wine/water/sugar mixture was poured over the salad).

ribs a la lana

These are not ribs of my own creation.  Rather, they are a tweaked recipe of mine that Lana prepared for Jason on Father’s Day.  Country Style Ribs (I told her these were my favorite for really soaking up flavor), corn on the cob and water chestnuts.  YUMMMM, Lana!!

We midwesterners really do love our corn on the cob.  And Keith’s dinner last night had both that AND macaroni & cheese!  Ain’t he cute?

I finally got to take Keith to Momofuku.  We were headed down to the east village for “The Golden Girls, The Musical” (cute…raunchy for raunchy sake…but fun), so we went to Momofuku for dinner.  I’d wanted Keith to try the restaurant for a while…long overdue:

We went above Target last night for dinner with Angel & Paul.  Talk about a spread – cheese platter, meats, olives, fruit, bread.  It was a beautiful night, and the backyard is LUSH and green, and shady enough for a perfect dinner.MAY Dinner at Angel & Paul's 1And KILLER drink made from the juice of an entire watermelon (called Fruity & Strong).  And Paul is the ONLY vegetarian I know that can grill a steak so well!    Keith certainly enjoyed himself, can’t you tell?MAY Dinner at Angel & Paul's 2 - Keith

Yes, it’s for real.  In fact, there were about 5 or 6 different types to choose from in the new Inwood market.  I steeled myself – couldn’t resist – munched on bits of octopus on crackers.  And it actually wasn’t that bad!
