We met up with a few people while in town. We managed to hit Gordon Biersch during happy hour – and had no qualms about ordering two drinks apiece right before the cheap prices went up.
My sis got there early, but we all managed to catch up.

my beautiful sister, Melissa

Kathy & Buck showed up to help us down a few happy hour drinks

1 part Elderflower cordial
2 parts ice cold Grey Goose vodka
Couple of ice cubes in the shaker, and give it a jostle
Place one mint leaf in the bottom of your martini glass
Pour the liquid right onto the leaf (releasing just enough essence & flavor)
This will soothe the savage beast

This is my absolute new favorite vodka – Hangar One uses real fruit to flavor their vodkas. So far we’ve tried the mandarin (yummy) and the AMAZING Kafir Lime. It’s so good I have a hard time mixing anything with it – other than soda and ice! I’ve been trying to find a store that carries it for weeks, and lo and behold we waltzed through Beacon Wines and there it was!

Elderflower cordial (1 part) and Grey Goose Vodka (2 parts) – shaken, served in a martini glass.
The perfect cocktail for Keith’s birthday!
a weekend with The Husbands October 27, 2008

We so rarely get weekends off together. So we try to make the best of them when we do. It started out simply enough – a big pot of potato soup for dinner on Friday night. Changes to my soup recipe – instead of onions this time I used one massive leek.
Great start to the weekend…that, and a nice cocktail.
Saturday morning, we got up and headed out to meet Angel & Paul for brunch and a mini tour of Inwood. Angel and I went to Otterbein together, and I haven’t seen either of them in at least 8 years. Get this – they live about 5 miles from us…and they’ve lived about 5 miles from us for the last 3 years! We walked them around Inwood (convincing them to move into the ‘hood wasn’t too hard with a walk through the park, then the farmers market). And we had a great brunch at Garden Cafe – and we even managed to avoid the rainshowers.
After they headed home, the weather started looking even sketchier – so we opted for some indoor fun. Keith wanted some Halloween Cookies, so I set up my big mixer and let him go at it while I sat and played Wii!
I helped mix the frosting and decorate them once the baking was done.

Max even got a bit of the frosting – of course, Keith made him work for it.
Sunday we had a nice late breakfast of duck eggs on toast. We took Max on a long walk, and bought some pumpkins. Then we spent the afternoon carving the pumpkins as the country-style ribs slowly braised in the oven. Please note how absolutely fabulous the carving session was – cold beer in a frosted mug, pumpkins sitting atop pages of the latest Crate & Barrel catalog, and Disney Halloween cartoons playing on the TV.

Once the pumpkins were done, I sorted through the guts and pulled out a big handful of seeds. Gave them a wash, splashed on some olive oil, salt & pepper and popped them in the oven for a lovely pre-dinner treat.
After dinner, we decided it was time for some more scary movies. It was time for my favorite: “28 Days Later”…damn that movie is fun. And scary. And AWESOME! And to round out the evening (and because if I go to bed right after a movie like 28 Days Later I’ll dream of zombies) we watched the original, animated “Sleepy Hollow”. I’d never seen it all the way through before…Ichabod Crane disappears???
So now the week is upon us. Tattoos on Tuesday, Halloween mayhem on Friday. 3 weeks till Mexico!

We got a late start Sunday – and that was fantastic. Curled up under a big comforter on a late Sunday morning – is there anything better? After a hearty breakfast of duck eggs and hash browns, we took a walk through Inwood, enjoying the crisp fall day.
Eventually we got word of a rendevous with the same gang from the night before. So we hopped in a livery cab and headed down to the Irish Pub across from the theatre where “Forbidden Broadway” plays. We met up with Laura & Bill, and Marie, and met their friend Annie – a fantastically interesting woman who plays piano on and off on the riverboats that Laura & Bill perform on.
Alex & Chris met us for a drink, before we bid adieu to Annie and headed out to find a place for dinner.
I was starving at this point – really, threatening physical harm unless I got some food. Eventually we settled on Blue Point for dinner – a seafood restaurant. Pretty underwhelming, but I was ready to eat tar by this point, so I devoured everything that was put in front of me.
Eventually the night, and the weekend had to come to an end. We said goodbye to Laura & Bill who head back to the riverboat today where the future of the riverboats – and their jobs – remains uncertain. Watch for them this weekend on Good Morning America Weekend edition as Bill makes his case to the public for saving the Delta Queen.
Keith and I hopped in a taxi, and headed home. We pulled out a comforter, curled up on the sofa and spent the rest of the evening snuggled up and watching TV. Alas, even that had to come to an end. But there’s always next weekend!
saturday night at Sardi’s October 20, 2008

Keith and I headed down to Sardi’s to meet up with Laura & Bill, Alex & Chris and Marie. We got there a little early on purpose – with the Broadway shows all packed and in progress, we got a table at the window in the upstairs bar of Sardi’s overlooking the street and a couple of theatres (Equus and Spamalot).
We got there just as intermission was coming to an end…so there were a number of folks wandering the streets sucking their cancer sticks.
It started simply enough – a French Martini.
That progressed into Grey Goose martinis as the night moved forward. We watched the street fill up with fans of Daniel Radcliff. At one point, Tom Cruise sauntered by below us – to the glee of everyone on the street. He’s short. And has a scrawny neck (as Keith pointed out).
The gang showed up, fresh from “Boeing, Boeing” – somehow they managed to squeeze through the Harry Potter crowd.
After one more cocktail, we went back to the apartment that Laura & Bill were staying in, and had another few cocktails while watching Sarah Palin on SNL. Oh Sarah Palin.
At the end of the evening, Keith and I stumbled into Gray’s Papaya for some hot dogs. Then we poured ourselves into a taxi and made it home. I’ll be honest, I don’t quite remember actually walking in the door of our apartment. Or neatly hanging up my wool vest. But I did. Thank god.
a cold night and the inkling of a head cold October 8, 2008

What to do? First, I retrieved my down-alternative comforter from the dry cleaners. Second, I wrapped myself in it, sat down on the sofa with the dog and played a little Wii while waiting for the hubby to get home. Right before he arrived, I prepped the cornish game hens. I was really wanting some comfort food – so my first thought was roasted chicken. But then I didn’t want to have to carve it up, so I opted for individual cornish game hens. I stuffed them full of fresh thyme, coated them in some olive oil, and sprinkled with salt & pepper – into the 350 degree oven for about an hour. Third, I made a new cocktail: Chris’ Cold Weather Cure All…here goes:
4 really thin strips of sliced ginger
1 tablespoon honey
1 teaspoon lemon juice
splash of hot water (to melt the honey)
**put all of these in a cocktail shaker and mix with a spoon until honey is dissolved, then add:**
2 ounces Amaretto (please, not generic)
1 ounce 12 year old Scotch (I opt for Macallan)
Shake vigorously, pour into martini glass and enjoy
It warms the cockles of your heart!
Fourth, enjoyed the cocktail while dinner was cooking. When the birds were just about done, I started boiling some diced (about one inch cubes – skin on) red potatoes, and steaming some sugar snap peas. I drained the potatoes, threw them back in the pan on the heat to cook away some of the moisture, then took them off the heat and added butter, salt & pepper and gave them a stir. Fifth, I sat down to enjoy dinner and watch some boob tube.
Sixth, I got another cocktail to help me through the debate. Seventh, I took my usual ‘under the weather’ mix: Theraflu with ginger, and then a gulp of Nyquil. Eighth, I slept like a baby.
